Imagine walking over white dunes stretching as far as the eye can see, and discovering crystal-clear lagoons formed by the rains among them. This is the unique spectacle of the Lençóis Maranhenses, now shining on the international tourism stage. According to recent data from the platform Similarweb, this destination ranks 4th among the most searched Brazilian places by foreign tourists in 2024, with over 12.3 thousand searches throughout the year.

This achievement goes far beyond numbers: it represents global recognition of one of Brazil's most surreal and enchanting landscapes. And it's no wonder. In July 2024, the Lençóis Maranhenses were officially recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, a title that reinforces its environmental, cultural, and tourist significance.

According to Socorro Araújo, Secretary of Tourism of Maranhão, this new level achieved by the destination is the result of intense and strategic work:

"The UNESCO title reinforced the park's international relevance, but we've also been heavily investing in promotional actions and hospitality, ensuring those who visit want to return."

This appreciation is no accident. The Government of Maranhão, under the leadership of Governor Carlos Brandão, has been implementing public policies focused on strengthening infrastructure and attracting investors. A practical example is the installation of the renowned Portuguese hotel chain Vila Galé in São Luís – an essential gateway for those visiting the Lençóis.

Additionally, there is strong investment in the Lençóis and Delta Pole, one of Brazil's most promising tourist regions. Jorge Babica, the area's superintendent, highlights:

"Our focus is on enhancing visitors' experiences and promoting our natural beauties at international events. We are also training local professionals and encouraging sustainable tourism."

Maranhão on the International Map: Unprecedented Presence in Lisbon

In March 2025, Maranhão participated for the first time with its own stand at the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL) – one of the sector's most important fairs in Europe. There, the state captivated the audience with a sensory experience that replicated the dunes and lagoons of the Lençóis Maranhenses, along with showcasing the region's vibrant culture.

This type of action promotes the destination in a sensitive and strategic way, sparking international tourists' desire to explore an authentic, natural, and unforgettable Brazil.
